Drink Spiking

Dear Student
Drink Spiking
This message is not intended to cause you unnecessary shock, alarm or discourage you from participating in the School’s busy and vibrant social life, but simply to warn you of the need to take care when you are in an environment where it is possible for your drink to be spiked.
Drink spiking is when a mind <http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/glossary/> -altering substance, such as a drug or alcohol, is added to your drink without you knowing to affect the way you act or behave with other people. It can occur for a number of reasons, the most common being to carry out a sexual assault, theft or for amusement. The act of drink spiking is illegal, regardless of whether an assault or theft of any kind occurs as a result of it.
Although few instances have ever been reported at universities in the UK, the School nevertheless remains susceptible to this kind offence occurring if a determined individual were to be on the premises. An allegation of drink spiking was reported by one of the School’s students in January this year.
Moreover, it can be very difficult to detect the substances used to perpetrate this kind of crime because usually they will not have an obvious taste or smell. It is therefore important that you take a responsible approach to drinking when you are in bars and clubs or other social events, and that you try to stick to the following guidelines:
* never accept a drink from anyone you do not know or trust;
* keep your drink in your hand, and hold your thumb over the opening if you are drinking from a bottle;
* keep an eye on your friends’ drinks;
* do not leave your drink unattended at any time, even while in the toilet;
* do not share or exchange drinks, or drink leftover drinks;
* try to drink from a bottle rather than a glass when possible, as it is more difficult to spike a drink in a bottle;
* if you go on a date with someone you do not know well, tell a friend or relative where you will be, what time you will be back, and the name of the person who you will be meeting;
* stay away from situations that you do not feel comfortable with.
